The holiday flies by in a haze of swimming, fun, sex, and talking, and soon and it’s our last night on this paradise island and tonight is the night--I’m gonna propose. This holiday with her just confirms that she is the right woman for me. She is beautiful and smart and laid-back and I just want to spend the rest of my life with her.

In the morning, while Cassandra is still asleep, I go to the restaurant on the Blue Lagoon Island and ask them to prepare a special meal for tonight and then to leave it under cloches just like in the aquarium, down by the sea. We spend the day snorkeling somewhere off the coast and then we sunbathe on the yacht, with our hearts full of love and wonder.

Soon we’re enjoying our stunning private meal on the beach. Cassandra is wearing a beautiful flowing red dress, and she has her sandals kicked off and her hair down. She looks sun-kissed and glowing with love and happiness, and just… perfect.

“This lobster is incredible,” she says, tucking into the feast. “It’s perfect.”

I top up her champagne.

“This week has been the perfect week with you and I never want it to end,” I say, suddenly feeling nervous.

“Me neither.”

I pull myself together. “I think it’s time for my surprise.”

“There’s another one still? I thought this whole trip on the Blue Lagoon Island was the surprise.”

“Not exactly, it was more of a setting for the real surprise.”

She half-smiles at me, questioning. I put one knee on the floor and she gasps. I reach into my jacket pocket and present my grandmother’s ring to her, and she gasps. “Oh, Greg!”

“I know we haven’t known each other for a long time, but I realized very quickly that you were the right woman for me and that I want to spend the rest of my life with you,” I say. I’ve been rehearsing it all week. But the next part just comes out. “I love you, Cassandra, and I don’t want to miss my chance at a happy ending so… will you marry me?”

I see a lot of emotions go through her eyes, surprise, happiness and then… sadness. Her stomach drops. What’s going on?

She won’t talk for a long time, and then finally, she says, “I need to tell you something and then you tell me if you still have a question for me.”

She’s looking away, avoiding my eyes.

I stand up and sit on my chair, a dark sensation pooling at the bottom of my stomach. Something’s wrong. Very, very wrong. What the hell can it be?
